Emerging roles
What is a forward deployed engineer? Role, skills and how to become one
A forward deployed engineer (FDE) is a software engineer who works directly with customers to build, deploy and run the product inside their environment. FDEs write production code, own delivery end to end and feed what they learn back to the product team. The role combines strong engineering with customer discovery and communication, and it is growing fast at AI and data companies.
What an FDE does.
- Works with a small number of customers to understand the problem that actually matters.
- Builds integrations, data pipelines and customisations so the product works in the customer's environment.
- Writes and owns production code, including debugging live issues.
- Translates business requirements into working solutions quickly.
- Feeds repeated customer workarounds back into the core product.
Skills the role needs.
| Area | Typical skills |
|---|---|
| Engineering | Python or JavaScript, APIs, backend development, debugging |
| Data | SQL, data pipelines, data quality |
| Platforms | Cloud services, deployment, increasingly LLMs and AI tooling |
| Customer work | Discovery, explaining trade-offs, working with business and technical stakeholders |
| Ownership | Autonomy in ambiguous problems; accountability for outcomes |
How to move into an FDE role.
- Build depth as a software engineer first: production systems, integrations, debugging.
- Take on customer-facing work: support escalations, implementations, technical onboarding.
- Show projects where you turned a vague problem into a shipped solution, with a result.
- Learn the data and AI basics FDE roles at AI companies now expect.
- Describe your work by outcomes and ownership, not only job titles; titles rarely say "FDE" yet.
Common questions
What does FDE stand for?
Forward deployed engineer: a software engineer who works directly with customers to deploy and adapt the product in their environment, owning the result in production.
Is a forward deployed engineer a software engineer?
Yes. FDEs write production code and own delivery, but focus on a few customers' problems rather than building features for all users.
How is an FDE different from a solutions engineer?
A solutions engineer mostly designs and proves solutions during the sales process across many accounts; a forward deployed engineer builds and ships the solution into a customer's production environment after the deal and owns it.
